Behind the Numbers – An Artistic Experience

Behind the Numbers is a participatory art experience created and led by Iranian artist Melika Rafat, exploring memory, loss and remembrance in response to lives lost during recent protests and events in Iran.

Behind every number is a person — a name, a life, a memory and a dream. Through fingerprint mark-making, moving image and sound, the work invites audiences to look beyond statistics and recognise the individual stories and futures represented by every number.

The experience creates a reflective space where art becomes a way to remember, to feel and to preserve stories that should not simply disappear. Each fingerprint becomes a personal act of acknowledgement, connecting individual memory with a wider collective experience.

Presented by DIPACT, the project forms part of the organisation’s wider commitment to creating space for artists from different cultures, identities and lived experiences to tell their stories through their own artistic language.
